Postcards from Skipsea
Listen: Voices from Skipsea
Look: Soundmap
This visual essay is about imagined landscapes and speculative futures in a village on the Yorkshire coast, drawing upon its ecological changes in land, water, and flesh.
“Voices from Skipsea” is a compilation of interviews which represent Skipsea residents’ memories of the past, ideas of the present, and predictions for the future. In editing the soundscape, I hoped to have their voices in dialogue with each other while accurately representing their points of view. In making the soundmap, I drew inspiration from The British Library’s UK Soundmap, the first nationwide sound map, in which over 2,000 recordings were uploaded by some 350 contributors during the period July 2010 to July 2011 (“Sound Maps” 2019). The “Soundmap” is a compilation of residents talking about different topics and environmental sounds taken from March 2019 through April 2019.
